Facebook states that after you request deletion, your account is disabled for 30 days (the grace period). After the 30 days, the deletion process begins, and it can take up to 90 days to completely delete all your data from Facebook's systems. However, some information may remain in backup storage for a reasonable period due to technical limitations. Facebook also retains certain data if required by law, such as financial transaction records. Importantly, messages you sent to other people will not be deleted — those copies remain in their inboxes, as those are their messages now, not yours.
Facebook is one of the most data-intensive platforms in the world. It collects not just what you post, but your browsing habits via the Facebook Pixel on third-party sites, your location history, device information, contacts, and inferred interests. Deleting your account removes your data from Facebook's active systems, but the company may retain anonymized, aggregated data derived from your activity. Facebook also shares data with its subsidiaries (Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger) and has extensive data-sharing partnerships with third-party advertisers and data brokers. If you've used Facebook Login on other sites, those accounts will remain but you'll need to recover them through alternative methods. After deletion, Facebook will still keep records of your deletion request and any legally required financial data.
Your copies of messages are permanently deleted. However, the messages you sent to other people will remain in their inboxes, because those messages now belong to their accounts, not yours. This is a common concern — many users expect deletion to be absolute, but platform architecture means shared content persists with other users.
Yes. Even though Facebook owns both platforms, they are separate services with separate accounts. Deleting your Facebook account does not automatically delete your Instagram or WhatsApp accounts. You must delete each separately.
Facebook initiates the deletion process immediately (your account is disabled), but permanent deletion takes up to 90 days. During the first 30 days you can cancel by logging back in. During the remaining 60 days, Facebook purges your data from active systems, backups, and disaster recovery systems.
Yes, after the deletion process is fully complete (after 90 days), you can use the same email address to create a new Facebook account. However, you will not be able to recover any of your old data, friends, or posts.
If you are the sole admin of a Facebook Page, you must transfer ownership to another user BEFORE deleting your account. Otherwise, the Page will be orphaned and may be removed. Facebook gives a warning about this during the deletion process.
If your Meta Quest or Oculus account is linked to your Facebook account, you may lose access to purchased games and apps. Meta recommend unlinking your accounts before deletion. Check the current Meta account policies as they have been evolving.
Facebook Login prevents deletion
If you use Facebook to log into other apps (Tinder, Pinterest, etc.), Facebook may warn that deleting your account will cause you to lose access to those services. Solution: Before deleting, update each linked app to use email/password login instead.
'Something went wrong' error during deletion
This often happens if Facebook's systems detect suspicious activity or if you have uncashed ad credits. Clear your browser cache, try incognito mode, or try a different browser. If it persists, contact Facebook support via the Help Center.
Facebook ad credits preventing deletion
If you've purchased Facebook ads and have unused credits, Facebook may block deletion until the credits are either used or forfeited. Contact Facebook support to request a refund for unused credits before attempting deletion.
Can't find the deletion option
Facebook has moved the deletion option multiple times. The current path is: Profile picture > Settings & Privacy > Settings > Your Information > Account Ownership and Control > Deactivation or Deletion. If you can't find it, use the direct link to the Facebook Accounts Center.
Facebook offers a 'Deactivate' option that is NOT the same as deletion. Deactivation hides your profile, removes your name from most things, and prevents anyone from viewing your profile. But Facebook keeps all your data, and you can reactivate at any time simply by logging back in. Deletion is permanent — after the 30-day grace period, all your data is scheduled for permanent removal. If you're unsure, deactivate first. You can always come back and delete permanently later. Deactivation is also useful if you just need a break from social media.
