Before You Start

Decide whether to temporarily deactivate or permanently delete. Instagram offers both and many users confuse them.
Save any content you want to keep. Instagram does not offer a download feature as comprehensive as Facebook.
Remove Instagram as a login method for any linked third-party apps.
Ensure you have access to the phone number or email for verification.

Access Deletion Page via Web

Open Instagram in a desktop browser and log in.
Instagram deliberately does NOT include a Delete Account option in the app.
Navigate to Accounts Center > Personal Details > Account Ownership > Deactivation or Deletion.
Select Delete account and click Continue.

Choose Reason and Confirm

Select a reason for leaving from the dropdown.
Re-enter your password.
A final confirmation screen appears. Click the red Delete account button.

30-Day Grace Period

Your profile becomes immediately invisible.
Log back in within 30 days to cancel the deletion.
After 30 days, permanent deletion begins.

What Happens to Your Data After Deletion?

Instagram deletes most data within 30 days. It may take up to 90 days for all data to be purged from backup systems. Your direct messages to others remain in their inboxes.

Privacy Implications

Instagram is owned by Meta and shares data extensively with its parent company. Instagram collects photos with EXIF location data, messages, search history, and browsing activity. Aggregated analytics may be retained after deletion.
